The term "head and neck cancer" refers to a variety of malignant tumours that appear in or close to the mouth, tonsils, tonsils, larynx (voice box), nose, and sinuses. Two of the major risk factors for head and neck cancer are using tobacco products and drinking alcohol. At least 75% of instances are associated with alcohol and cigarette use, and exposure to secondhand smoke may further raise one's risk. Alcohol and cigarette users are more likely to have these cancers than those who only use one of the two substances. A sexually transmitted infection called HPV increases a person's risk of developing head and neck cancer. Most of the time, HPV disappears on its own. However, for those who do not recover from the virus, it can subsequently result in a few types of head and neck cancers. In fact, it is believed that HPV is to blame for 70% of oropharyngeal cancer cases in the US.
